MUNICH — Skoda plans to cut jobs even as the Volkswagen Group Czech brand looks expand its EV offerings and boost vehicle sales by 8 percent this year.
Skoda’s success is based on its extensive model range and comparatively low fixed costs, CEO Klaus Zellmer told Automotive News Europe sister publication Automobilwoche at a conference here on Feb. 26.
To improve this, the automaker, which employs 41,000 people, plans to slash 15 percent of its workforce. The jobs will go through natural fluctuation, Zellmer said.
Octavia could be next Skoda EV
Skoda is considering launching a full-electric version of its Octavia compact hatchback to add to its BEV lineup of the Enyaq and Enyaq Coupe compact SUVs, and smaller Elroq compact crossover.
Another BEV would “do Skoda good,” Zellmer said.
He said the EV could be a variant of Skoda’s bestseller, the Octavia, which would also have a plug-in hybrid version.

An electric Octavia would be a change of direction for Skoda, which had been expected to get a version of the upcoming VW ID1 electric minicar.
German press reports this month said Skoda had turned down an electric minicar, which would have been a successor to its discontinued electric Citigo, because it would only be marginally profitable.

Zellmer said Skoda’s EV range currently generates much lower margins than its combustion engine vehicles. The Elroq sells at a similar price to the comparable Karoq combustion engine SUV, but its margins are significantly lower, he said.
India, Vietnam to help 1M sales goal
Skoda aims to sell more than 1 million vehicles this year, an 8 percent rise on 2024, as it eyes further expansion in India and Vietnam to reduce its reliance on Europe.
India is Skoda’s most promising growth market and the brand has said it will play a crucial role in the company’s international expansion.
A key milestone for Skoda in India was the recent launch of the Kylaq compact SUV, which was developed in the country and will be built there. The Kylaq is Skoda’s first model aimed at India’s key sub-4000 mm segment, which accounts for nearly half of all car sales in the country, according to the automaker.
The VW and Skoda brands are also working on a plan to localize a small electric car in India as part of a wider program within the group to produce an EV that costs less than €20,000 ($21,000).
In addition, Skoda is preparing to begin vehicle assembly at its new plant in Vietnam. Initial production will focus on the Kushaq small SUV, followed by the Slavia small sedan.
